Good to Great and Jesus

I woke up this morning thinking about Quality. It’s a weird sounding word isn’t it? Quality. Often I worry that it’s the sound of my own Achilles heal. Quality. You see I can do a vast number of things Pretty Well. I can preach, edit graphics, write & edit content, fix computers, be a husband, be a father, be a pastor, and even be a Christ follower…Pretty Well. But here is the thing…Pretty well SUCKS next to truly great. If you haven’t ever read Jim Collins book Good to Great I would highly recommend it. I read it about 4 years ago and apparently my brain works “Pretty Well” too because I’m just applying it now.

I’ve discovered that the few things I used to do great have begin to slide into the “pretty well” category. Having kids, the growth of our church, and the busyness of life have begun to push things into that category. I have, like so many fast food restaurants begun to trade quantity for quality and it’s going to kill me if I don’t fix it. I believe that doing a few things greatly can save a person’s calling, mental health and sanity.

So immediately following a God-send of a dream I woke up and decided which things needed to be put back.

  1. Scripture tells us to “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, THEN all these things shall be added onto you”. This gives us a very clear prioritization of our lives. FIRST I need to violently push my prayer, devotional, & scripture reading practices back into the “great” category.
  2. I need to work on my marriage, specifically romance. For those of you out there who have known me for a bit, I’m a deeply romantic person. So I need to slow down and make enough margins in my life to allow for creative though about how I’m going to express my love, passion and appreciation for Steph.

This of course gets difficult because I simply have too many things on my plate. I need an Admin, and about 40 volunteer hours a week…I think I’ll sign off and ponder that. If I don’t, I fear this post will go from great to good :)
